PERFORMANCES
Pangulong Bangaw
“Didn’t expect a monologue of one of my fave novels, “Lord of the Flies”! Beautiful Filipino adaptation by BJ Crisostomo, powerful direction by Jenny Logico - Cruz & brilliant performance by actor Joel Garcia! Post pandemic theater at its best!”
- Aureaus Solito, filmmaker
"Although poetic, this play deserves multiple channels; community-based groups of audiences--barangays, subdivisions, or even corporations. Somewhere a group, sharing common habits and ideologies, congregate.
A by-product of a 3-year collaborative effort, the performance is definitely a huge progress for Philippine Theatre. Langgam Performance Troupe is a thesis statement to the progressive nature of art and theatre reinforcing a fresh way of dramatizing and devising sociopolitical stories without propagandizing."
- Kiat-Kiat Commentaries
Pangulong Bangaw was a poetic adaptation of William Golding's 1954 novel, The Lord of the Flies, a tragic parody that centered on a group of boys stranded on a deserted island as they struggled to reconcile their differing approaches to survival: to preserve still one's sense of civilization, or to surrender to the nature of savagery.
LPT's performance adaptation sought to further explore this theme of survival by extending the premise to questions of one's being: What does it mean to live, continue, endure, and sustain? How is being perceived between conflicts of community versus individual, human organization versus human nature, reason versus reflex, external versus internal, and order versus anarchy? To tackle such complex themes, Pangulong Bangaw had transposed The Lord of the Flies into a one-actor performance which considered the human body as an allegory of a society that struggled to keep itself from becoming undone and dismembered. By using a singular actor to encapsulate and adapt the novel's rich narrative and ensemble of characters, Pangulong Bangaw served as an investigation into the anatomy of mortal and moral conflicts.
Pangulong Bangaw performed its Manila Tour from March-May 2023, which touched on the following venues: 89 Panay, The Playground Studio, and De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde Design and Arts Campus.
